A game of Oh Hell at our table.

How to fill in the sheet

Write the first names across the top in seating order. The left-hand column gives the number of cards in each round: 1 to 10 then back to 1, that is 19 rounds. If you play up to 13 cards or only the way up, cross out the extra lines or add them in pencil. Before playing each round, write everyone’s bid under “Bid”; at the end, write the points under “Points”, and the running total small next to them if you like.

Before letting the dealer bid, add up the bids already written down: if the dealer’s bid would make the total come out exactly at the number of tricks, that value is forbidden. Circle the dealer’s bid: it is the line where the rule gets checked.

A bid that is made is written as 10 plus the number of tricks (10 for a bid of zero), a missed bid as 0 or the agreed penalty. The “Total” line is filled in at the end of the game.

Counting as you play

In Oh Hell the arithmetic is simple; what gets lost is the bids. Call them out loud, write them down before the first card, and never change them. At the end of the round, everyone counts their tricks out loud: they must add up to the number of cards dealt.

The counter does all that for you: it takes the bids in order starting from the dealer’s left, greys out the value forbidden to the last bidder, assigns the last remaining trick automatically, works out the points according to your scoring table and keeps the full grid of the game, with each player’s percentage of bids made.
