In short
In 6 nimmt!, each card you collect is worth bullheads: 1 in general, 2 for multiples of 5, 3 for multiples of 10, 5 for doubles (11, 22, 33…) and 7 for the 55. Bullheads add up from round to round; when a player reaches 66, the game ends and the lowest total wins.
Names. The game is German (Amigo, 1994) and sold in English under its original title 6 nimmt! in Europe and as Take 6! in North America; in France it is 6 qui prend!. The penalty symbols are called bullheads or cattle heads depending on the edition. The scoring is identical everywhere.
How it works
Each player holds 10 cards and 4 cards start 4 rows. Everyone chooses a card at the same time, then the cards are placed in ascending order, each at the end of the row whose last card is the closest lower value. The player who places the sixth card of a row takes the first five, and their card starts a new row. A card lower than every row end forces you to take a row of your choice.
Card values
| Card | Bullheads | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary card | 1 | 3, 17, 92 |
| Multiple of 5 | 2 | 5, 15, 25, 95 |
| Multiple of 10 | 3 | 10, 20, 30, 100 |
| Double (two identical digits) | 5 | 11, 22, 33, 44, 66, 77, 88, 99 |
| 55 | 7 | Both a multiple of 5 and a double |
The deck holds 171 bullheads in all. Collected cards are counted at the end of the round, once the 10 cards have been played.
How to score
- At the end of the round, each player adds up the bullheads on the cards they collected.
- That total is added to their game score.
- As soon as a player reaches or passes 66, the game is over: the player with the fewest bullheads wins.
A “clean” round (no card collected) scores 0: it is possible, and often the key to a game.
Variants
- Pro variant: with fewer than 10 players, use only the cards from 1 to (10 × number of players + 4), which makes the game more readable.
- Game to 100: for a long evening.
- Fixed number of rounds: (for example 4) instead of the 66 threshold.
Common mistakes
- Counting 3 for the 55: the 55 is worth 7 bullheads, the worst card in the game.
- Mixing up multiples of 5 and of 10: 20 is worth 3, 25 is worth 2.
- Adding up the cards instead of the bullheads: the card’s number doesn’t count, only the heads printed on it.
- Stopping at 66 mid-round: finish the round, then see who passed.
