A game of Contrée at our table.

How to fill in the sheet

One line per deal. Write the contract bid (80, 90 … 160, or capot), the suit, and tick “doubled” (contré) or “redoubled” (surcontré) if applicable; then the taking team and the team that had the lead. After the last trick, count each team’s cards (162 in total, last trick included, plus 20 per declared belote).

Contract made: the taking team scores its contract plus its card points; the defence scores its card points. Contract failed: the defence scores 160 plus the contract (plus its belote, if any); the takers only score their belote. Doubled, everything is multiplied by 2; redoubled, by 4. Carry the running totals into the last two columns; the game is played to 1,500 points, or your table’s target.

Sample game

190 heartsA90 + 104 = 1945819458
2100 spades, doubledB(160 + 100) × 2 = 520071458
380 diamondsB7180 + 91 + 20 = 191785249

In deal 2, B bids 100, A doubles, B only makes 88 card points: a doubled failure, A scores (160 + 100) × 2 = 520. In deal 3, B makes an 80 with 91 card points and a belote: 80 + 91 + 20.

Mistakes to avoid on paper

  • Writing the defence’s actual points on a failed contract instead of 160 + contract.
  • Forgetting to add the contract to the card points on a made contract.
  • Doubling only the contract, rather than all the points, when the contract was doubled.
  • Counting the belote towards the contract at a table that doesn’t allow it (or the reverse): agree the rule before playing.
