How many points to win? The target of 17 card and board games in one table

“How many are we playing to?” is the first question of any game, and the answer changes everything: in Skyjo, reaching 100 makes you lose; in Belote, reaching 1,000 makes you win. Here is the usual target of seventeen games, those on the site and those on their way, with the direction of the ranking and a short version for evenings when you only have an hour.

In short

The target depends on the game, and above all on which way the ranking runs. You win by reaching a score in Belote (1,000), Contrée (1,500), Flip 7 (200), Rummy and Uno (500), Mille Bornes (5,000), Mölkky (exactly 50). You win by being the lowest when someone reaches the limit in Skyjo (100), Hearts (100) and 6 nimmt! (66). Yahtzee, Skull King, Barbu, Papayoo and French Tarot are played over a fixed number of turns or rounds.

Highest or lowest?

In “penalty” games (Skyjo, 6 nimmt!, Hearts, Barbu, Papayoo, Rummy), points are bad news: the limit serves as a trigger for the end of the game, and it is the player with the lowest score who wins, not the one who reached the limit. The most frequent mistake at these tables is to stop the game in the middle of a round because someone “has gone over”: you always play the round to the end, and then compare the running totals. The counter applies the ranking direction of each game and shows the winner without anyone having to remember the rule.

Points target or number of rounds

Target games (Belote, Flip 7, Skyjo) take a variable amount of time: a game of Belote to 1,000 can be over in five deals on two capots (all the tricks) or drag on for ten. Games with a fixed number of rounds (Yahtzee, Skull King, Barbu) have a predictable length, which is the decisive argument for an evening with a timetable. Many tables convert one into the other: “Belote in six deals”, “Skyjo in five rounds”, “6 nimmt! in three rounds” — it is perfectly playable, and the counter lets you choose the mode.

Short versions that work

When you only have an hour, halving the target almost always works: Skyjo to 50, Belote to 501, Flip 7 to 100, Hearts to 50, Contrée to 1,000. For 6 nimmt! and Skyjo, a fixed number of rounds is simpler still. For Skull King, play rounds 1 to 7 (half an hour) or, if you want to keep the big rounds, 3 to 9. For Yahtzee, there is no short version: the grid has 13 boxes, and that is what makes the game.

And in the event of a tie?

Most rulebooks don’t settle it. The usual practices: an extra round between the tied players (Skyjo, 6 nimmt!, Flip 7), a shared win (Yahtzee, Skull King), or a tie-break on the last round (the player with the best score in the last round wins). In Belote and Contrée, a tie is rare since you only stop once a team has passed the target; if both pass it in the same deal, the higher one wins, and on a dead heat you play one more deal. Choose your rule beforehand, and tell the counter: it offers a tie-break round when one is needed.

Frequently asked questions

How many points to win at Skyjo?

You don’t win by reaching a score: the game stops when a player reaches 100, and the player with the lowest total wins.

How many points to win at Belote?

1,000 points most often; 501 for a short game, 2,000 for a long one. The first team to reach the target wins.

How many points to win at Uno?

500 points. Each round, the player who got rid of their cards scores the value of the cards left in the others’ hands.
